Apparently, many followers of Jesus want to surpass Him. If Jesus tells me there is something that He doesn’t know, I’m okay with not knowing that also (actually, I’m good with knowing a lot less than Jesus). When the inner circle of disciples were talking to Jesus about end times and exactly when that would be, He made it clear to them that wasn’t a concern to Him.
Jesus confirmed to these disciples that they would not identify the day or hour He was talking about when in the conclusion of the Matthew passage He said,
This isn’t ‘watch and figure it out’ as many try to do but pay attention to what the LORD is doing in your now. God has a different perspective on both Knowing and Time than we have in our current age. Jesus was secure with only the Father knowing the Time and did not feel it made Himself less God by leaving it in the Father’s hands. He also was convinced His disciples would not know the moment. This seems contrary to many moderns who seek to know what He Himself didn’t see any need in knowing. Knowing can become a distraction for making the most of Now.
As a little more perspective on God and Time, consider a few “time” references from the Bible:
The prophet Daniel records several ‘time’ phrases relative to “time of the end”:
Peter wrote in 2 Peter 3:8 that,
This is not to say that one day is 365,250 days or that a year is 253 minutes or any of the other mathematical magic one could concoct. Peter is stating that God does not measure time by the solar clock, Gregorian calendar or moon phases. Our concept of time is relative to our earthly existence and the things we are most aware of. In my life at my age, time is measured by how often I need to refill my pill minder, how often I refill my Q-Tip caddie, how often I need to buy bananas or salad mix. None of these are eternal measuring units of time but rather a blend of chronology and events. We think in days and seasons but God sees time by what is completed.
Jesus entered into a human body when the timing of God was fulfilled, the “fullness” of time, when everything was complete to accomplish the LORD’s purposes. The “time of the end” has the same context as the absolute completion of that which has been in process. Those who suppose to know beyond what Jesus knew err in seeing events rather than the completeness of God’s purposes. Events do not measure or limit the perception of God’s timeliness.
Revelation 10: 6 says,
Several translations make that last phrase “that there would be no more delay” which carries the same concept that Time will no longer continue when measured against its completion point. Would you believe that when God again has His will “on Earth as it is in heaven”, there are changes. When you are in the presence of God, there is no day or night, no human measure of time for as it says in Revelation 22:5,
There is a predisposition to become preoccupied with time, events, wonders and lesser elements rather than be occupied with the Creator, Redeemer and Eternal One and who He is, Always. Likely, Today is the fitting point to keep our focus on the LORD.
