Where are You

Genesis 3:9

But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

Think back just a moment to when you were much younger and knew you had done something wrong but didn’t want to face the consequences. Now, imagine you are that First Couple, living in perfection, not lacking anything needed, having a personal relationship with God, actually conversing with Him. Then you violate the terms of the relationship because you want something additional you aren’t wise enough to understand. Oops.

Before long, you get to that, “Where are you?” moment. Recognize that the God who knows all is not asking where you are because He didn’t already know but rather is calling you to acknowledge how you came to know Shame. He is God and you are not, so you reason you can hide from the guilt that comes with knowledge. You did want knowledge, to know Good and Evil—it’s just that you didn’t perceive the consequences.

Do you still have that ‘hide from God’ feeling? Wanting to be acceptable to Him and yet unable to face the responsibility for guilt for doing it your way.

Take heart, fellow traveler, God seeks you out and simply desires you to be honest with yourself about ‘where’ you are. He desires to be closer than your fear allows. Talk to Him about it now.
