Walking Established

Genesis 17:1-2

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lᴏʀᴅ appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”

Since God last spoke to Abram, Ishmael has been born, 14 more years have passed and now Abram is 99 years old. It is unclear what Abram might be experiencing but God really lays it all out before him this time—I am God Almighty, you walk before me and be blameless and I will:

1. make my covenant between us
2. multiply you greatly
3. make you the father of a multitude of nations, renamed Abraham
4. make you exceedingly fruitful producing nations and kings
5. establish everlasting covenant to be God to you and your offspring
6. give you the land of your sojourning, Canaan, as everlasting possession
7. rename Sarai to Sarah and make her blessedly fruitful

The only response asked by God of Abram is the “walk before Me, and be blameless.” Consider that it is only fitting, an appropriate response, to walk in the ways of God, to follow His path, if one is to “covenant” with God. Covenant means to be under an agreement, to be bound by the terms, to have responsibilities, obligations and commitments to fulfill the contract. Imagine Almighty God offering to enter into such an agreement with His created being. Yes, this is opportunity once again to be in agreement with God.
