Seekers of God

Psalm 14:1-3

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The Lᴏʀᴅ looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.

How high an opinion of yourself do you have? Is God lucky to have you accept Him as Lᴏʀᴅ?

Today’s passage from David in Psalm 14 probably seems familiar even if you avoid the Old Testament as it is quoted in Romans,

None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 1

When God surveyed mankind, He was not surprised that we were unlikely candidates for relationship with Him. The surprise for us is that He sought out relationship with us anyway! In our post-fall condition, we were given over to our bent to go our own way by nature (not by creation). None of us can claim to have made the way back to God but must only claim He did it all,

…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 2

All the way back to Eden, God has been the Initiator. It was God who sought out Adam and Eve who were hiding themselves in their sinfulness. It was God who ‘called’ to Abram and invited him to come to the place God would provide—all Abram brought was responsiveness.

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 3

David’s psalm concludes that we bring nothing to God in our poverty but that He provides the refuge and is able to restore those willing in covenant to live in His ways. Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ.
