Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
First we have ‘very good’ and then we have ‘not good’ so what is that all about? Man was not lacking in his being good but just as God had equals in relationship, God knew that Man would be completed by another equal, that there would be a togetherness with one of like nature. Man had already discovered that plants and animals typically had Another but knew there wasn’t a ‘like’ him.
‘Helper fit for’ only points to another that completes the goodness of the first. Not of lower quality, lesser in the image of God, but one who would be a fulfillment such that together they would be One. That ‘hold fast’ is not a grasping after, restraining, but rather a bonding together. Maybe just like the unity we see in God. Such was the intention.
Just as it is not good for us to be alone without another of likeness to our nature, it also is not good for us to be alone from God.
Draw near to Him today.
