Sometimes we lose meaning even when the translation is accurate: ‘you worm Jacob’ sounds derogatory in English but that is not the intent.
Isaiah is addressing Israel on behalf of the Lᴏʀᴅ and is encouraging them in their distinctiveness and usefulness in His eyes. Yes, they are offspring of Abraham who God refers to as Abraham, the friend of God. Yes, Abraham was called out by God to be the father of those who had a heart after God, to become the father of those who sought after, agreed with and followed God where God led. There follows a promise of protection, of opposing those who sought ill against Israel, that God would prevail.
‘Worm’ is the female coccus ilicis which before laying eggs, attaches herself permanently to a tree trunk, lays the eggs and then dies. Her body shelters the eggs until the next generation hatches. As she dies, her body releases a scarlet fluid which becomes the base for the royal purple dye of antiquity. 2 The word picture is that the Lᴏʀᴅ is making something special out of Israel. Just as Jacob (supplanter) was touched by God to become Israel (God persists). God’s commitment to Israel is not fleeting but will endure despite the enemy. Israel will continue as the royal representatives among the nations because the Lᴏʀᴅ helps, the Lᴏʀᴅ redeems. The Lᴏʀᴅ takes the worm and turns it into royalty, the symbol of what will become through the ages.
It is seldom the moment that reveals the nature of we worms but rather what God is able to draw out of our lives in Him. Don’t look down on His process in you or minimize what He is making you into through His work in your life. You are intended to be more than you appear:
