Living Tight

Psalm 25:14

The friendship of the Lᴏʀᴅ is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.

Quite possibly your version of this text reads ‘friendship’ differently—counsel, secret, confide—but each carries the original meaning of closeness, intimacy, knowing the inner meaning of its object.

‘Fear’ of God has lost the original meaning of respect and reverence for One who has Infinite wisdom, understanding, ability, power, breadth, One who is way beyond our comprehension except as He reveals Himself to us.

The Lᴏʀᴅ is the singular Revealer of Himself but contrary to the modern view of mother nature, His creation is not the clearest revelation and knowing God through creation apart from revelation is fraught with distortions. Creation was likely a more accurate portrayal of God before we corrupted creation with sin.

In our verse, knowing more about the Lᴏʀᴅ is the outflowing of intimate relationship with the Lᴏʀᴅ which only comes with respect and reverence for who He is. Not as we imagine Him to be but as He reveals Himself. That revelation only comes to those who are willing to accept His terms, to know Him as He makes Himself known.

Daniel faced the challenge of revealing Nebuchadnezzar’s dream but first blessed the God of heaven who was the true Revealer,

Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king’s matter.” 1

If you desire to know what God desires you to know, entering in to abiding relationship is your access. He will show the way—if you are willing to accept, to ‘live tight’ fixed upon His desires always, above all else.
