In all fairness to those who see the Lᴏʀᴅ as loving in all things, today’s text is about things God hates. No, there is no hidden meaning that somehow ‘hate’ is to be interpreted ‘love’ for there are those elements the Lᴏʀᴅ dramatically and openly takes a stand against. These are things that divide, that block relationship with Him for they are the opposite of who He is, are opposing His character and intolerable to Him. He will not accept pride, deceit, denial of innocence, that set upon evil or that which divides unity with Him.
Seems pretty simple—God desires relationship rooted in truth—without divisiveness—embracing His values. Anything that opposes the Truth that is found in Him, that denies what He has established as True and Right, is not acceptable in His Kingdom. These are not positions of ignorance but rather opposition to what He has made known as best for Life with Him. He does not quibble about His position on these:
The fear of the Lᴏʀᴅ is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. 1
This does not violate God’s desire to express His love to anyone willing to turn to His way, to walk in agreement with Him,
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2
God is all-in by making the way for us to leave the ways of sin and live in His ways,
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 3
God hates but not without reason. He has done all that is possible without taking away our personal will to choose, has extended Himself in every way that is true to His character to express His love toward us. But. The Lᴏʀᴅ loves us enough to be true to what is best for us and allows us to choose to be hateful. Our choice.
