Guarded

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Just how much attention do you give to guarding what God has given you to make life in Him possible and fulfilling?

The first charge God gave our forefather in perfect surroundings was to work it and keep it. ‘Keep’ carries the same thought as guarding, keeping watch, oversight and is not a passive charge. In Proverbs 4:23 the context is preserving the integrity, the wholeness of the heart. Vigilance emphasizes diligence, actively preserving the well-being of all that makes the body function exactly as intended.

From it flows the springs of life’ reminds us how vital is heart set upon God. God cherishes the heart fixed upon Him. Not only does it draw near to Him but it also keeps its distance from temptation,

Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 1

So, buckle up, get armored, be on vigil, stand guard over your inner being, that part of you fixed on the Lᴏʀᴅ and expect rivers of living water to flow out of your heart where He dwells.
