Bible names frequently have meanings not evident in the English transliteration of that name. Several times in today’s passage an old Hebrew name appears which points to ‘a witness’ of what is being transacted. Each instance is one of our two characters calling for a witness more trustworthy than the other person in the transaction. Both call for the Lᴏʀᴅ to be that ultimate witness:
Let us just suppose that maybe we don’t trust everyone we have contact with in this life. Do you want to try to contractualize life to create your own sense of security that all will work out the way you desire or intend or are you willing to believe that God is the Witness of the life you live out before Him. Will you trust God to ultimately provide justice for you in His own way and not according to your dictates? The beliefs by which you live are witness that you believe He sees and cares and has your interests at heart. Trust Him to do what is beyond your means.
