Full of Glory

Isaiah 6:1-7

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said:
Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts!”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Are you impressed with the wonders of nature, the grandeur of the great outdoors? I live in northwest Montana, Big Sky Country, near Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake and half a dozen national forests. These splendors of nature are visited by millions who travel here just ‘to commune with nature’ but the largest percent of those visitors miss the true glory:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 1

We cannot grasp the true glory of the Creation without comparison to the true Glory of the Creator Himself. Every time a person approaches the manifest presence of the Lᴏʀᴅ in the Bible, they are awestruck. And that is just through human eyes which are only familiar with this creation. In today’s passage, those awed by God are seraphim, angels who have been in the presence of God since they were created and yet continually express their response to the Lᴏʀᴅ’s nature as being so much more than anything created. From this heavenly perspective, the glory we see is only a fragmentary view of who the Lᴏʀᴅ actually is. As wonderful as earth’s nature may seem, God is infinitely ‘fuller’ of glory. The earth is full of His Glory. It is His glory and we should honor Him with our recognition of His worth-ship. Worship Him above all.

His worthiness, His worth-ship, draws us to Him but quickly we must acknowledge our own unworthiness, that only by His work on our behalf can we begin to appreciate the Lᴏʀᴅ for who He is. Amen
