Divine Interference

Genesis 31:24, 29

But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.” … It is in my power to do you harm. But the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Both Laban and Jacob were rascals and experienced in one-upmanship. Yet there comes a time when God intervenes to preserve the lineage of Abraham through Jacob who would be renamed Israel shortly. Laban felt that Jacob had stolen away not only some of his herds and his daughters but also his household idols and set out to pursue and reclaim what he claimed as his. And he takes significant forces with him to see that he can get back what was his. Laban catches up with Jacob in northern Canaan but…

God shows up. Laban has intent, motive, ability, determination but God shows up. Before Laban can confront Jacob, God visits Laban in a dream and makes it clear to Laban that he is not to fulfill his intent against Jacob—Laban is warned not even to speak against Jacob. Timely for in the morning when Laban faces Jacob, he repeats what God has spoke to him and complies.

How often would you guess that God has intervened on your behalf that you were never made aware? Do you live as though it is always in your power to resolve difficult circumstances you face or do you believe that God may be involved beyond your perception?

Believe that God is more active in your life than you perceive. Look for His participation and honor Him by giving Him credit when He acts beyond your control of the situation. He is God.
