Belief to Eternal Life

John 3:31-36

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

How easy is it for you to believe in the fantastic? Can you actively believe that the supreme LORD actually cares enough about you to do the hard part, enabling the possibility of you having lasting relationship with Him, forever? The Infinite, Eternal LORD entering into your life if you are willing to commit to His priorities for you.

He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.1

Can you accept that He ‘who is above all’ is actually telling the truth when He ‘bears witness’ to everything He says about the desire of God the Father, God the Spirit and God the Son to enter into eternal life with you? What could you possibly do to merit such favor, to receive something you have no right to in yourself, something you could never earn no matter how well intentioned you might be?

Can you believe that God is true when He says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” or the opposite that, “Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him”? Notice that belief is Life while the opposite is not acting upon the truth of God and receiving the opposite of Life. ‘Does not obey’ isn’t simply doing life your way but is decidedly not agreeing with the Creator’s precepts for Life in full commitment to His desires. While we typically think of God’s wrath being His hatred of us, could it not be that experience of not being willing to receive His relationship terms and living out the consequences of Life totally, eternally devoid of Him.

Would any of us choose to live with the LORD for eternity if we did not desire to live with Him in this first stage of our lives? Our eternity begins when we are born and we determine our destiny during our earthly life by the simple choice of Belief or going our own way forever. Belief is from the heart and is actionable, lived out in committed relationship with who He truly is, caring about what He says is forever valued. God is not going to pressure us into an eternity with Him that is different than our relationship with Him in this Life. Only if we agree with Him now will we have the ‘burden’ of forever in His presence where His will is always done fully. Anything else would be Hell.
