Alternatives

Leviticus 26:14-21

But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you...
And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase…”

Immediately preceding today’s text is an extensive list of the blessings of the Life in agreement with God but then, in all fairness, we have the alternatives.

God is willing to let you do life your way if you so desire. He is willing to let you reap according to your sowing. If you so desire to put your efforts into life your way, He is willing to let you have the consequences of your insistence. You have the ability to choose your course but with the singular caveat that your choice will also determine your ultimate results.

If you so determine not to listen to God’s revealing what is ultimately best for you and are dedicated to not following Him but to persist in yourself, yes, you will reap the results. Maybe not immediately—maybe as our original ancestors you can taste the pleasures of your desires in the moment—but, the harvest is assured.

Your question must be, “Is the moment worth the fulfillment?” Is the moment worth having the panic, the waste, the heartache, being in submission ultimately to results with inability to escape? Are you willing to rest in your pride to master life your way and accept the result when God continues without you?

Sometimes the choice of your will deeply matters. Forever.
