Agreeable

1 Samuel 2:35

“And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever.”

We don’t get too far into the Bible before recognizing God is persistent, that no matter what obstacles we place between the Lᴏʀᴅ and ourselves, He keeps trying to restore the way of relationship with Him. Today’s text is an overview of the priesthood of Eli, current representative of God to the Israelites but not consistently faithful to the Lᴏʀᴅ. In light of Eli’s casual approach to serving God, God sends Eli this message:

I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever.”

God’s clear priorities in those who would represent Him:

  • the ‘desired’ would be ‘raised up’ by the Lᴏʀᴅ
  • the ‘desired’ will live according to the desires and ways of the Lᴏʀᴅ
  • the Lᴏʀᴅ will establish this ‘desired’ and provide a sure foundation
  • the ‘desired’s life will be eternally before the Lᴏʀᴅ

Samuel was the immediate fulfillment of this prophecy but the ultimate eternal priest would be God Incarnate, Jesus. For us, this also sets a pattern for those willing to agree with God’s desires for relationship with Him—believers living in Jesus are to be a ‘royal priesthood… a people for His own possession.”

Are we agreeable?
